Had a busy day at Ivory Street this afternoon. I had 3 guys pop around to the stand who were keen to chat to me about my experiences in the homelessness sector over the last 12 months. They are looking to make a documentary about homelessness in Brisbane. I'm always very encouraging of anyone who wants to put a spotlight on what's happening out there.
Ironically, while I was explaining the challenges, Tracey from 4 Voices came over to me to let me know there was a young man who had come to the stand and was without a place to sleep tonight. His support worker was there too, and had been calling all day to places trying to find help. I called Micah Projects, and was told that because he was under 25, they couldn't help. I said that I know for a fact that is not true, as I've seen Micah put up many people under 25 in hotels. They told him to go in and see them in Monday. Just unbelievable.
I called Murri Watch, and despite them actually not being funded to help homeless people, they said they would take him in. I am so grateful to them for what they do. The young man and his carer were so relieved. It's just terrible that there are almost no options for people who suddenly become homeless, especially on the weekend.
Dig In: gave us a big tub of meals again tonight, so I called Chris on my way home and asked if he would like any. I stopped in the check out the place. It really is noticeable when Bronwyn & the team from Next Step Connect have been visiting. He had furniture in all different spots in the unit, he was very happy to have it feeling more like a home.
Certainly better than last time when he just had a sleeping bag and that was it.
I spoke to a few other residents in the property and gave out a bunch more meals, it was lovely to meet a few more people there. Chris said they have been checking on him and making sure he's ok.
Day off tomorrow. Noi and I are going to go down to Thornlands and visit my dad and go for a bike ride. Should be nice ❤️❤️❤️
