This past week at NWCG has been a whirlwind of activity, support, and heartwarming encounters. Nick, a dedicated NWCG volunteer, shares his experiences from the frontlines.
A Community Welcomes Paul Back:
The return of NWCG founder Paul brought a wave of excitement. Nick describes how even bystanders on the street recognized and greeted Paul – a testament to the impact NWCG has made.
Providing Shelter and Support:
Nick, alongside other volunteers, tackled the ever-present need for shelter. Four tents were set up at Wickham Street, with Nick adding two more himself. This dedication extended to furry friends as well. A couple recently assisted by NWCG expressed concern about their dog, Nugget, who was experiencing health issues. Nick and the team facilitated a vet visit through West End Community House, ensuring Nugget received the care he needed.
Volunteers Step Up:
The NWCG spirit of collaboration was on full display. A gentleman recently assisted by NWCG turned the tables, volunteering his time to help load the van and collect food from Second Bite. The generosity extended further when a church member stopped by, donating a carload of baked goods for the NWCG stall. Nick's team also expanded, with five volunteers pitching in and residents themselves contributing to a record-breaking setup time. The resulting food and clothing stall attracted a steady stream of people in need, fostering connection alongside basic necessities.
Stocking Local Pantries:
The NWCG commitment extends beyond the immediate needs at outreach locations. Nick ensured local pantries at Community Plus+ West End Community House, Community Plus+ Yeronga Community Centre, Max Chandler-Mather, and Brunswick Street Pantry were well-stocked, further expanding their reach within the community.
Gratitude Abounds:
Nick's blog post concludes with a heartfelt expression of gratitude to everyone who contributes to NWCG's mission. The combined efforts of volunteers, community members, and partner organizations create a powerful force for good in the lives of Brisbane's homeless community.
