This week was a whirlwind of activity, heart warming encounters, and a reminder of the incredible generosity in our community.
Packing for a Purpose:
The night began with Vita and Shirlene lending a hand at my place, organizing our overflowing Tupperware containers. They're a fantastic team!
Grocery Haul and a Change of Plans:
After work, Ewan, Vita, Shirlene, and I headed to Coles for a substantial food run. Hot cross buns were a delightful addition to the usual shopping list!
Our initial plan was to head into the city. However, a quick call to Josh about his dog, LaLa, revealed a surprising turn of events. Josh was enjoying a free feed at Grill'd Wintergarden, a program I completely forgot about!
Grill'd Wintergarden's Heartwarming Initiative:
Scrambling to adjust our plans, I picked up Shane and two others in Musgrave Park before heading to Wintergarden. The atmosphere was incredible! Michael, a Grill'd employee and Dig In volunteer, estimated they'd serve around 400 free burgers, complete with chips and drinks. It was inspiring to see the dedication of the staff, some even working on their own time! Grill'd deserves major kudos for this exceptional initiative. People from all walks of life were enjoying a meal and friendly conversation - a truly uplifting experience.
Finding Temporary Refuge for LaLa:
While at Grill'd, Josh met a couple who recently secured housing and expressed interest in taking LaLa. This wasn't an ideal long-term solution, but with limited options at nightfall, it provided a safe haven for the night. I'll be following up to ensure a smooth transition.
Continuing the Support:
After dinner, we dropped some people off at Musgrave Park, distributed food and drinks from Coles, and restocked the pantry at Community Plus+ West End Community House. Finally, we accompanied Josh and LaLa to their temporary home. This was an emotional moment for Josh, as he wanted to ensure LaLa's well-being with the new owners. Helping those in need often involves difficult choices, and Josh handled the situation with admirable strength.
Ewan even connected with two individuals who offered to leverage their contacts to help him find work. It was fantastic to see him socializing and enjoying a hot meal. He's a quiet soul, but a kind one, and I truly hope his journey unfolds as he envisioned.
The night ended back at home, and the tireless efforts continued! Ewan even gave his number to two individuals who offered to leverage their contacts to help him find work. It was fantastic to see him socializing and enjoying a hot meal. He's a quiet soul, but a kind one, and I truly hope his journey unfolds as he envisioned.
