I'm back at the helm of NWCG after a break, and the first thing I want to do is express a massive thank you to Nick. He stepped up in a big way while I was gone, keeping things running smoothly and forging strong bonds with the residents at Musgrave Park. His dedication is truly inspiring.
The Emotional Toll:
Nick's recent blog post resonated deeply with me. It highlighted the challenges faced at Musgrave Park, and I remember experiencing similar emotions when I first started with NWCG. Witnessing the struggles of those experiencing homelessness can be incredibly difficult.
Strength in Community:
However, amidst the challenges, there's a powerful sense of community at Musgrave Park. Over 60 tents now stand there, and it's remarkable to see residents looking out for each other. It's important to remember that a small number of people can disrupt this harmony, but it's worth noting that most troublemakers aren't even residents.
Shining a Light on NWCG:
NWCG's efforts are gaining well-deserved attention. We recently reached out to A Current Affair, and they filmed our work at Musgrave Park, interviewing residents as well. This media exposure will hopefully raise awareness about homelessness and the support NWCG provides.
A Community Steps Up:
We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support from the Brisbane community. Recent donations, like the 30 popular folding chairs, are a testament to this generosity.
A Heartwarming Reunion:
One of the most rewarding aspects of NWCG's work is witnessing success stories. Last night, I had a truly heartwarming reunion with a former Musgrave resident who transitioned through Next Step Connect. She's now pregnant and expressed immense gratitude for NWCG's past support. Moments like this fuel our commitment to keep helping.
Back to Work:
The evening continued with setting up four new tents at Musgrave Park, including a couple in the "Kiwi Land" section. By 11 pm, I was back "in the thick of it," surrounded by the community I'm passionate about supporting.
