This past weekend was a whirlwind of activity, but the kind that fills your heart to bursting.
Giving Back with Signal Flare
It all started with a fantastic day volunteering at the "BBQ for the Homeless and Others in Need" hosted by Signal Flare. The team truly does an amazing job – everything ran smoothly, and the atmosphere was incredibly positive. Witnessing the joy on the faces of a family leaving the event, thanking us for the food, solidified the importance of these initiatives.
A Shirt, a Moment of Kindness
Later, a gentleman approached, his shirt ripped, asking if we had any spares. We were packing up, but managed to find a men's shirt for him. His immense gratitude, even refusing to take additional shirts offered, and insisting others might need them more, was a powerful reminder of why I volunteer.
Community Support Fuels the Mission
Back home, a pleasant surprise awaited – a fridge overflowing with food donations from generous neighbors like Monika and members of the Samford and Bunya Lions Clubs. Even Noi's workplace, Lite n Easy, chipped in with discounted meals.
Delivering Hope One Stop at a Time
Armed with this bounty, I embarked on a series of deliveries. One recipient received a donated phone and food. Another, a hardworking individual struggling to find affordable housing, was thrilled with a tent, air mattress, and bedding (huge thanks to Kim for the ongoing bedding donations!). His hopefulness for finding a permanent home soon resonated deeply.
A Call for Help, a Bond of Trust
An unexpected phone call from a hospital psych ward took my breath away. It was regarding a gentleman I've been supporting for some time, and they'd listed me as his next of kin. Learning of his decision to seek help was incredibly moving, a testament to the unique connections we've formed. This goes beyond charity – it's about friendship, love, and compassion.
Fueling Local Pantries
The weekend concluded with restocking pantries across the city, including a bargain box from Coco's in Annerley and a bread delivery to Annerley Baptist Church for their Monday lunch program.
Every moment this weekend was a testament to the power of community and the impact we can make together.
