Late night, but a rewarding one!
Today was a whirlwind, but seeing positive change makes it all worthwhile. Here's a glimpse into our evening:
Securing Shelter for a Determined Individual:
We partnered with The Greens today, and afterwards I raced to BCF before closing to acquire a new tent for a resident at Musgrave Park. This individual, battling both medical and mental health concerns, had lost their previous tent in a recent downpour. Unfortunately, their transient nature made it challenging to provide immediate assistance. However, one of our core principles is only setting up tents with the resident present.
Celebrating a Personal Victory:
The good news? After weeks of encouragement, this person finally visited the doctor and obtained medication! This positive step towards self-improvement filled me with immense pride. We then went to BCF together, purchasing a tent, airbed, lantern, and table. The new tent is up, and we look forward to supporting them further on their journey.
Investing in Quality & Addressing Needs:
Another long-term resident at Musgrave Park also received a brand-new tent tonight. A string of bad luck with leaky and moldy tents necessitated this upgrade. The noticeable improvement in fabric quality was remarkable. While we'd love to offer such high-quality tents to everyone, budgetary constraints come into play.
The Fundraising Impact:
Thanks to the incredible funds raised at our recent event, we can now confidently purchase 14 of the $169, 4-person pop-up tents. These new tents will be crucial in addressing the current waitlist of approximately 5 people. We anticipate receiving a couple of orders from BCF Keperra soon, allowing us to fulfill these needs.
The Day in a Nutshell:
By 9 pm, all tents were set up. The evening concluded with our regular pantry visits, wrapping up by 10:30 pm.
Looking Ahead:
We remain dedicated to providing safe and secure shelter for those in need. With ongoing support, Northwest Community Group will continue making a positive difference in the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness.
