A Night of Deliveries and Smiles: Helping Brisbane's Homeless Community

Amber Porter

This past night was a whirlwind of deliveries and grateful smiles as we delivered essential items and treats to those in need across Brisbane.

Our journey began with setting up a tent for a gentleman sleeping rough in Ferny Hills, thanks to the generous donation of a supporter, Susan. We also left a mattress for added comfort. While he wasn't there at the time, we know he'll be surprised and hopefully have a more comfortable night's sleep from now on.

Chris joined me for the night, and together we delivered delicious meals prepared by Monika to a young lady in Ashgrove who is being supported by North West Youth Accommodation Service Inc. She was so appreciative of the hot meals and ice cream, and it was a pleasure to see her smiling face.

Continuing our route, we made a quick stop at Community Plus+ West End Community House pantry to donate some of the ice cream. We then picked up pizzas generously donated by Stone & Brew, a fantastic local business dedicated to helping the community at Musgrave Park. Despite their wish to remain anonymous, we believe in recognizing those who make a difference.

The pizzas were a huge hit at Musgrave Park, disappearing in under two minutes! We also distributed ice cream, water, chocolate bars, and donuts, leaving many smiling faces in our wake. It was a busy 20 minutes, but incredibly rewarding.

The situation at Wickham Street has become particularly concerning, with a significant increase in tents and people experiencing homelessness in recent weeks.

We distributed a large quantity of blankets, sheets, clothes, and other essential items to those in need. While it's heartbreaking to see people living in such rough conditions, they were incredibly grateful for our visit. We're committed to checking in on them more frequently to ensure they have access to food and basic necessities.

The outpouring of gratitude we receive during these deliveries is always moving. As we head back to the car, the chorus of "thank you" and kind words fills us with a mix of satisfaction and a desire to do more.

On a positive note, a highlight of the night was discovering a public pantry at our local Picabeen Community Centre. This is exactly why we hold interagency meetings – to connect resources and ensure those in need have access to them. We're committed to keeping this pantry well-stocked to support our local community.

This was just one night, but it's a small example of the incredible network of support systems working together to help Brisbane's homeless population. We are grateful for the support of our community and the tireless efforts of volunteers and organizations that make a difference every single day.
