This week, we delve into a unique experience I had a while back, captured in a video I never shared until now.
Encounter at the Free Shop:
While volunteering at the East Brisbane Free Shop, a gentleman approached seeking some items. After assisting him, I offered to deliver them to his residence as he was traveling by bicycle.
An Unexpected Reality:
Arriving at his location on Reid Street, Woolloongabba, I discovered he was residing in an abandoned building. With his permission, I took a video tour of the space, capturing a glimpse into his unconventional living situation. The charred remains of a neighbouring building fire, which had occurred just the day before, hung heavy in the air.
Resourcefulness and Resilience:
Despite the lack of electricity and running water, he had managed to create a somewhat functional space. My own tumble within the building served as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with such living conditions.
Gratitude and Respect:
As I took my leave, he expressed his appreciation for my visit and the opportunity to showcase his "place." This encounter highlighted his sense of pride in his makeshift home.
Sharing an Experience:
Please note that this video is not intended to promote squatting. It's a chance to share a personal experience and offer some insight into a different kind of living situation.
Respectful Engagement:
As always, we encourage respectful and constructive comments in our community forum.
This post offers a glimpse into the realities faced by some within our community. It's a reminder of the resourcefulness and resilience of the human spirit, while also acknowledging the safety concerns associated with such living situations.
