A Generous Haul & Early Start:
Northwest Community Group's day began early at Coles, resulting in a fantastic haul of fresh fruit for those we support. Setting up the stand by 6 pm allowed for an efficient evening of service.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work:
A special shoutout to Karen, whose volunteering efforts tonight were invaluable! Together, we ensured a smooth and successful distribution.
Providing Shelter & Addressing Needs:
Helping a gentleman with ongoing support relocate from the waterfront to Musgrave Park was a priority. Setting up a new tent ensured he had a safe and secure place to rest.
Food Pantries & Beyond:
The evening continued with visits to all four of our regular food pantries, ensuring everyone had access to essential supplies. Additionally, a heartwarming act of compassion – thanks to Kim's recent donation, we were able to deliver a care package to someone struggling in Moorooka.
Responding in a Crisis:
Just as we were wrapping up for the night, an emergency call from Musgrave Park came in. A resident had been assaulted and required assistance. While advising to call an ambulance for medical attention, we respected his concerns about an outstanding warrant. We offered to help him relocate to a safer location.
Safety First & Unexpected Turns:
En route to Musgrave Park, we strategized ways to encourage him to seek medical care. Upon arrival, however, he was not at the tent. Fortunately, a phone call confirmed he had independently secured transport to the hospital and was receiving help. We retrieved some belongings he requested for safekeeping, planning to connect further tomorrow. The news of him seeking medical care was a huge relief.
The Importance of Community:
This experience underscores the importance of the support network we strive to build at Northwest Community Group. While tonight was a late one, ensuring the safety and well-being of those in need is always our top priority.
