A Day of Connection, Compassion, and Tough Choices at Ivory Street

Today's outreach at Ivory Street in Fortitude Valley was a whirlwind of encounters, highlighting the complexities and rewards of our work.

Welcoming a New Volunteer

We were thrilled to welcome Dani, a doctor at RBWH, as our first volunteer! We met at the dog park while walking the pups (another story for another day!). Dani's passion for helping others, despite her demanding schedule, is truly inspiring.

Offering Support and Guidance

Many people crossed our path today. One gentleman with a sling, injured from a fall the night before, needed medical attention. While Dani and I encouraged him to visit the hospital, we understand the importance of respecting his decision-making. Sometimes, all we can do is offer guidance and support.

Connecting with the Broader Community

An encounter with a representative from a large charity was particularly interesting. He expressed appreciation for our work, acknowledging both its impact and the naysayers it seems to attract. Perhaps it's our vocal advocacy and insistence on accountability that ruffles feathers. Our focus, however, remains on collaboration - "We are stronger together," as I always say. Another representative from the same organization reached out, eager to learn more and offer their thanks.

Helping Individuals in Need

A 62-year-old gentleman battling liver cancer approached us seeking a tent for Musgrave Park. Facing deportation and yearning to reunite with his family in the Philippines, he needed a decent night's sleep. We provided him with a tent, directions to a support center, and a listening ear.

We also set up a tent for a Kiwi couple, expanding their community within Musgrave Park.

The Difficulty of Saying No

Missing a planned Dungeons & Dragons game (my first ever!) was a tough call, but the needs of others come first. Walking past someone sleeping rough by the river with no shelter was equally heartbreaking. While I'll check back tomorrow, our current tent stock is depleted.

It's a harsh reality - there are more people in need than we can help on our own. However, we'll keep pushing forward, doing everything in our power to alleviate suffering. A huge thank you to Chris for the food pick-up, and to Jayden and Noi for their ongoing assistance.

Together, we can make a difference.
