A Day in the Life of NWCG: From Burgers to Bunnies, Charity Never Sleeps

NWCG founder Paul takes you on a whirlwind journey through a day filled with both challenges and triumphs in the fight against homelessness.

A Team Effort:

The day began with a dedicated group of volunteers – Bronwyn, Shan, and her friend – sorting donations and tidying up NWCG's headquarters. Their tireless efforts ensure the smooth operation behind the scenes.

A Clean Start:

For the first time in almost a year, Paul treated the NWCG van to a professional cleaning at Zoom Carwash Alderley. The team there, understanding NWCG's mission, went above and beyond to make the van sparkle.

A Helping Hand for a New Mom:

Following up on a previous encounter with a former resident in housing who is now pregnant, Paul called to urge her to see a doctor. Thankfully, Bronwyn's groundwork paved the way, and an appointment was secured for Monday. This highlights the ongoing support NWCG provides even after successful housing placements.

Expanding NWCG's Reach:

The day continued with NWCG securing resources for future endeavors. Folding chairs were borrowed from Lions Club Samford QLD for upcoming community dinners, and a discounted gazebo was purchased from BCF Keperra. These partnerships allow NWCG to expand its services.

A Community BBQ with a Touch of Magic:

The evening culminated in a vibrant community BBQ at Musgrave Park. A special thank you goes to Tommy Q Band, whose impromptu performance created an unforgettable atmosphere. Over 50 burgers were served, fostering a sense of connection and joy.

Responding to Emergencies:

A call for an ambulance during the BBQ underscored the constant need for vigilance within the community. Paul's immediate response ensures that those in need receive timely medical attention.

Connecting Those in Need:

The evening brought another opportunity to connect individuals with resources. A woman living in a tent with her children was facing safety concerns. NWCG connected her with Micah Projects, an organization dedicated to supporting such situations.

Providing Shelter:

Three tents were set up for individuals waiting for NWCG's assistance. Additionally, bed packs donated by Kim Liddell were distributed, demonstrating the invaluable role played by NWCG's support network.

The Harsh Realities:

The day concluded with a bittersweet encounter. Two teenagers and a pregnant young woman who had their tents removed by Council with no warning were found camped by the river. Despite initial exhaustion, Paul ultimately provided them with a tent for safe haven. This encounter serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by those experiencing homelessness.

Safety First:

The discovery of a large knife carried by one of the teenagers highlights the harsh realities of life on the streets. While understanding the need for protection, NWCG emphasized the importance of peaceful conflict resolution.

A Network of Support:

The success of the day wouldn't have been possible without Auntie Shirlene's dedication. Her tireless efforts at the BBQ exemplified the spirit of giving back within NWCG's extended family.

The Work Continues:

As Paul concludes his account at 3 am, exhaustion is evident, but the commitment remains unwavering. Tomorrow, the journey continues with a stand in Fortitude Valley. NWCG's dedication to supporting the homeless community is an inspiration to us all.
