Today was a whirlwind of activity, focusing on restocking supplies and connecting with those in need at Musgrave Park!
Replenishing Resources
After a late start (3 pm), I began by picking up a significant amount of food from Coles. Next stop was BCF, where a generous overnight donation allowed me to purchase a new tent for someone in need. Finally, a trip to Big W ensured I had enough air mattresses on hand – I'm currently going through about 15 per week!
Meeting the Wonderful "Kiwi Land" Crew
Arriving at Musgrave Park, I set up the new tent for a group of individuals from New Zealand. They've dubbed their area "Kiwi Land" and bring a positive energy to the park with their friendly camaraderie. (See picture!)
Helping Another Person Find Shelter
I also ran into a gentleman I'd met previously at Ivory St. Having relocated to Musgrave Park, he required a tent. While my remaining stock was limited, I provided him with one of the smaller tents and a comfortable air mattress to ensure a decent night's sleep.
The Pantry Trail and Beyond
Following my time at Musgrave Park, I restocked pantries at several locations: Community Plus+ West End Community House, Brunswick Hotel, Max Chandler-Mather Community Centre, Federal MP for Griffith's office, and Community Plus+ Yeronga Community Centre. Additionally, I made my usual Sunday drop-off at Annerley Baptist Church for their Monday lunch program.
Connecting with the Indian Outreach Crew
While on the road, a contact from an Indian outreach group distributing food on Sundays reached out. They'd encountered someone under the William Jolly Bridge in need of a tent. After finishing the pantry route, I headed over to investigate.
Responding to Urgent Medical Needs
Upon arrival, I discovered a group gathered at a BBQ. One individual I've been supporting informed me their medication had been stolen. Concerned about their well-being, I contacted the incredible Dr. Juergen. Within minutes, he sent the necessary prescription to my phone! Luckily, Terry White Coorparoo is open until 11 pm, allowing me to pick up the medication and ensure they took a dose.
Advocacy and Collaboration
The individual also expressed frustration with a lack of follow-up from three support groups after leaving jail. I documented their details and plan to contact these organizations tomorrow. Since they lack a phone, communication might be a challenge, but I'm committed to helping bridge the gap.
Learning to Better Serve
On a personal note, an audiobook I've been listening to lately perfectly aligns with my work. "Pretreatment Guide for Homeless Outreach & Housing First" by Jay S. Levy offers valuable insights on the Housing First approach (American context, but still relevant). Knowing this will make me even more effective in supporting those experiencing homelessness.
Together We Make a Difference
This evening served as a powerful reminder of the importance of community, collaboration, and the need to advocate for those in need. Thank you to all who contribute to making a difference!
